AFMLTA wrote a letter to Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs, informing her about the National Languages Plan and Strategy (NLPS) and its alignment with the goals of the New Colombo Plan to strengthen engagement with our region, deepen intercultural understanding, and prepare young Australians to thrive in a globalised world. AFMLTA wrote a letter to Tony Burke, Minister for Home Affairs, expressing interest in the Australian Government’s announcement of an investment of $25 million to support community schools, $5 million of which is to be dedicated to a specialist Asian languages stream, aimed at helping more students achieve fluency in Asian languages through to Years 11 and 12. We requested a meeting with the Minister to further understand the vision for the program and to discuss the possible role that AFMLTA might be able to play in working towards the achievement of its goals.
