Reflection
As someone who has always been passionate about language learning and the study of French, receiving the Nathan Harvey Legacy Scholarship was such an amazing opportunity and experience. In 2024, while teaching French at Darwin Middle School, I was incredibly honoured to be selected as the scholarship recipient. I chose to travel to Nice, France, where I undertook an intensive immersive language course that deepened my linguistic skills and cultural understanding.
Each day, I worked with an inspiring tutor and a group of French learners from different corners of the globe who shared the same passion for French as me. Together, we developed our conversational skills and shared our own cultures and experiences while also exploring the richness of Nice as a microcosm of French culture. Experiencing daily life among the Niçoise people gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of the regional uniqueness and lived realities that shape language for the people of France.
Returning to the classroom, I felt more confident and authentic in my teaching. Where previously my understanding of French language came from a university setting, through this experience, I was able to show my students how deeply regional and culturally embedded French language is by sharing my stories of Nice as a place with its own heart and soul. This experience strengthened my ability to connect with my students who bring so many experiences, cultures and language to the classroom and to bring French language learning to life! This experience will be something that will stay with me forever!
