Participate in this FREE webinar with Professor Kathleen Heugh, one of the world’s most distinguished scholars in multilingualism, language education, and language policy.
Gain insights to the stories and experiences, research and work which has led to Kathleen receiving the FIPLV Award which recognises exceptional and outstanding contributions to language teaching and learning.

Kathleen is widely recognised locally and internationally as a leading global authority whose work has shaped policy, practice, and research across continents. Her influence spans the UN, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, African ministries, and global research networks.

Kathleen was born in South Africa to a family with deep Scottish and Australian roots from whom she inherited a commitment to advocacy for local and linguistic rights. This legacy, combined with her own experiences across South Africa, Australia, and beyond, has fuelled her lifelong dedication to the recognition and maintenance of first, home, and mother tongue languages, and to confronting the global tragedy of language loss.

Her work in Southern Multilingualisms, and her support for bilingual programs in Aboriginal languages in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankuntjatjarra (APY) Lands, exemplify her commitment to community‑anchored, socially just language education.

The AFMLTA has been privileged to collaborate with Kathleen over many years, benefiting from her keynote contributions, her mentorship of Australian languages teachers, and her unwavering commitment to linguistic justice.

Languages learning supports Literacy and Numeracy skill development

Using ELLA in Primary Languages Programs (F-2)

Are you keen to find out more about ELLA, an exciting digital language learning program?

The ELLA apps were designed by language, early childhood and technology experts to be social and collaborative resources used as part of a play-based Languages program in Australian preschools and schools.

A key part of the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting language learning, ELLA inspires children by driving a genuine interest in a new language and culture.
The program has been used extensively in preschools for 10 years and successfully trialled in schools. It is now available free to all Australian primary schools in 13 languages.
